Drug Used for Fibromyalgia May Get Banned from Florida

Pills as question on white isolated background. Medical concept. The popular, natural pain-fighting plant, kratom, may be banned from the state of Florida due to a bill state Republican, Greg Evers has introduced. The bill is intended to put kratom on the state’s list of controlled substances, thereby banning it from its current availability and use.

Kratom is legal in the United States, although the FDA has placed it on its “Drugs and Chemicals of Concern” list.

Kratom is a leaf from the tropical tree, Mitragyna speciose. When chewed, kratom produces a drug-like effect that helps ease pain, cough and opioid withdrawal, among other claims.

According to Wikipedia, “Kratom behaves as a μ-opioid receptor agonist, similar to opiates like morphine, although its effects differ significantly from those of opiates. Kratom does not appear to have significant adverse effects, and in particular appears not to cause the hypoventilation typical of other opioids.”

The Florida Senate Bill (SB 764) still has to pass through two more committees after it passed the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice earlier this month. Floridians wanting to express their opinions should contact their Florida state senator.  A list can be found here.

Tennessee, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Vermont currently have bans on the plant.

Kratom has been used for thousands of years – mostly in Asia – but concerns about its safety range from its addictive properties to hallucinogenic ones.  A study published in 2012 in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association recommends that “Physicians should be aware of the availability, user habits, and health effects of kratom. Further research on the therapeutic uses, toxic effects, and abuse potential of kratom and its constituent compounds are needed.”

According to an article by Healthline, “All is not lost for those that may need kratom for medicinal purpose. The proposed bill in Florida provides ‘an exception from scheduling for any drug product approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which contains mitragynine.’”

That provides little hope for Floridians who use on kratom for pain relief, given that there are no clear timelines for approval of drugs containing mitragynine in the FDA pipeline.

Have you used kratom for fibromyalgia, and has it helped you or not?

Thank you Kratom users for your replies.
I heard of Kratom on Facebook and have been trying to get it.
I’ve had chronic pain for 34 years. About 15 of those years was put on opiates by doctors which did help me manage my pain and keep my full time job. Suddenly the laws changed and the rug was yanked out from under me.
I go to a pain management clinic but they tell me to meditate and wish my pain away.
The doctors and pain clinic are now a joke.
I hope to use Kratom and never see another doctor for pain.
    That would be wonderful

Kratom Saved my life, and for Sandie, the reason why it was banned in Thailand was because of political reasons, had nothing to do with kratom being dangerous.

I am healthier than I have ever been, been taking kratom for 3 years because of arthritis .. just had a physical . and all is well.

This message is for Sandie,,as I printed in my post,,I too have never tried Kratom,,,but I am not arrogant enough or self center’d enough to think I have any right too tell others that do find relief from this herb,,I am not arrogant enough to think I have any right to tell them how much they should suffer!I am very very curious to understand why people like you, think its your right to tell others how much they should suffer??I really don’t understand??Do u understand right now, this very minute, someone in chronic pain is contemplating stopping there non stop physical pain by death??Because of all these uneducated new laws, regulations ,the fear of jail time, loss of liscences to practice medicine, loss of being able to feed there families, pure human tortereous suffering created by all these uneducated ,”new”regulation,,,people who think they have a right to make these regulations are causeing terrible physical pain and suffering w/there mouths and opinions,,soo please enlighting me,,I really don’t know why people like you think its your job to add to there suffering by suggesting MORE regulation based on NO TRUTHFUL PEER review of this herb kratom,,actually asking the people who need it and use it before even thinking of adding another obstacle to getting medicine to help w/our physical pain,,,please tell me why u think its ok to let us suffer more?????paita

I researched this, and the country’s where this tree is native have banned its use. so when I read that, I figure if so many country’s banned it, there has to be some concern for the health of those who would consume it. I do feel that is something can bring on a concern, then it should be controlled and a prescription required. too many take these things, and then never carry a list of what they take, thus causing problems if an emergency arises and Drs treat on the info they are given.

I have used Kratom for chronic pain related to back pain and permanent nerve damage/pain from auto immune disease. With the regulations regarding pain treatment in Florida, Kratom has been the life saver for many who are unable to get their medications or helped many to leave the life of drug addiction (Heroin, Meth, etc) behind them.

WHY NOT JUST THROW ALL CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERERS TO THE WOLVES? i’ve had it,at 57 yrs of age and just mind boggling pain for last 7 years.I am starting to wonder what am i hanging on for? just to suffer?I wonder how many people who write bills like this have severe chronic pain.I’m starting to think that they don’t suffer like any of us.Karma will catch up with them one mayor at least i hope so

Kratom is so bad it must be banned! But let’s leave the door open for big pharma… Can anyone else read between the lines? I’ve been a daily kratom user for years. It has helped make me more productive in my career as well as a better father and husband. Why? Because I simply feel better. No one has ever died from kratom. If your aim is to ‘protect the public’, start with the real killers… alcohol, tobacco, fast food, prescription drugs etc etc. The hypocrisy kills me.

This is again an attempt to give us no pain medicines what so ever,,even in herb form,,natural form,,I myself have never tried Kratom,,but I am definitely not arrogant enough to think I have any right to tell others how much they should suffer,,,that is what all this is about. Arrogant S.O.B’s on there 25 hand thoroughbreds,,soo self center’d they think its there job to tell others how much they should suffer,,,,I wish for 5 minutes they could live in the chronic pain we suffer everyminute of every day,,,They did the same thing to decocainized coca teas,,,,which is part of the reason Bolivia thru out the D.E.A.,thee other reason was human abuses from the D.E.A.,,..they claimed the coca leaf in its natural form, traditional form,,no solvent added,,which Bolivians used for centuries in its natural form for traditional rituals as well as natures herbal medicines ,,like the homeopathics did,,,but as of 2009,,the D.E.A,,H.H.S,,,literally changed the definition of cocaine,u know that white powder crap,,not a green leaf,,,but they literally changed the definition of cocaine that had been in existence since 1900,,,as a white powder drug derived from the synthetic manipulation of the coca aklaliod, now synthetic means the use of ethanol and hydrochloric acid,,,they changed it to the alkaloid IN the leaf,,,, and changed the drug testing kits,to use more ethanol and acid in them,,soo everytime they test a coca leaf,,it will MAKE a positive..not” test” for it when it concerns coca tea/leaf.. This is not surprising to me what there doing to kratom now,,,wrong 100%%%,,,but not surprising now a days,,,sad but true,,,paita

I have personally used kratom since 2004 for Fibromyalgia, which includes IBS, And i have chronic pain from hell anyways. Heel spurs, etc. It is a relative of the coffee tree. I used it to work, to smile when I have no reason or feel no reason to smile since I can’t walk very far. And my hands and forearms are completely in pain.
    — AS a PLUS it stopped me from drinking ever again.
Kratom, when compared with most pharmaceuticals, is relatively safe, safe as far as I know.
Kratom is SUPER BENIGN, not so sure on enhanced versions, which no one seems to care about the difference anyways or will never know unless they try it.
Everyone wants one sentence to sum it up because they already know everything.
Speeches only reach those who know about it
    changing minds is ?
No crazy acting people on youtube in 10 years on kratom…. I just don’t get it. I realize we used to have mortality from coughing from diseases and we got control of health and such and quality of life maybe we thought everyone would be happy. Or that food, soda, whatever is a drug, corporations are uncaring, good social media is here. Like corn flakes was started by a health nut then we have sugar cereals from Kelloggs.
I wake up in utter hell. Fibromyalgia they tell me, Fun stuff being told your only option is drugs like Gabapentin, which makes people CRAZY GABAPENTIN< which guy jumped off bridge was taking, I have taken GABA and it is akin to 5 beers drunkeness while being sober or so. I loved it cured my fibromyalgia, but i really just felt drunk and stupid. Not that I am smart otherwise, lol……
Freedom of speech is a great thing.
This country is for the people, USA

The D.E.A. and F.D.A. have become the U.S. equivalent of Gestapo S.S.. The D.E.A. was a bad idea to start with and has only gotten worse ever sense. States are able to do their job. They don’t need the D.E.A. I don’t need the D.E.A. You don’t need the D.E.A. .Nobody needs the D.E.A. They are misappropriating and commandeering billions of dollars of public funds that America can no longer justify..Their funding needs to be cut by,at least, ninety-five percent and all need to be restructured to a much smaller and much more restrained gang of Authoritarian sociopaths.. This is a group of renegade law enforcement completely out-of-control .and way over-the-top.They are using the war on drugs as a smokescreen and a ruse to subvert our Civil and Human rights and increasingly more as a ruse to seize cash and property in their war on the American people. Also, through gross incompetence, have made it nearly impossible for a pain sufferer to get treatment without being thrown in jail.

I am a 53 year old woman who has had chronically painful health issues as far back as age 10. I had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 36. 8 months later and after a minor car accident, I developed fibromyalgia.

I tried everything from regular massage to noni juice, supplements, etc. All my years of chronic pain, I never took any kind of narcotic. I did take a boat load of ibuprofen during those most painful years of endometriosis before my final surgery. 3 years into Fibromyalgia, my Family Dr. prescribed me hydrocodone w/acetaminophen, 5mg/500mg which I took for the next 12 years, every day, 2 pain pills as they were prescribed, never more, never asked my dr. for more and even though they did not take all the pain away, they took the edge off enough that I could get through most of a work day not in severe pain. I also could and can not take any NSAID’s due to severe stomach burning and pain from having taken so many for so many years.

With the current legislation and change regarding pain medication, I knew I would have to get off my pain medications, I did this myself. I cannot take the stress of jumping through the hoops that have been put in place, and be humiliated because I need pain medication. Stress exacerbates fibromyalgia pain so much. I do not have insurance and cannot afford $400 a month for insurance under the “Affordable Care Act”, nor do I have $200+ a month to go to a pain management Dr.. Kratom helped me wean off my pain medication in one week with very minimal withdrawal symptoms. It gives me more relief from pain and pain relief that lasts longer than the opioid pain medication prescribed by my Dr. It has given me a little extra energy and certainly improved my mood and sense of well being because I feel better and I do not have to be under the constant stress of not being able to take something that will humanely relieve the daily pain I have suffered with for 17 years.
