This piece expresses my personal pain in the larger context of society. On the outside, the box is nothing remarkable. It blends in with the millions of other boxes in the world.

The outside of the box represents the physical normalcy of my appearances. When I walk down the street I portray the image of a young healthy girl, yet when you open me (the box) there is a world drowning in constant struggle and pain. No one can see past the outside layer — therefore nothing beyond the surface exists to anyone but me.

This art a courtesy of PainExhibit.org, an online educational, visual arts exhibit from artists with chronic pain who use art to express some facet of the pain experience.

The Pain Exhibit’s mission is to educate healthcare providers and the public about chronic pain through art, and to give voice to the many who suffer in silence.

Pain Exhibit recently launched its new Spanish language website at PainExhibit.org/es.

Hi there. I just want to tell you that I love your piece. It speaks in a language most people never have to hear, but I understand. My box looks a lot like yours. Thank you.
