Roadside prostitutes working at a traffic circle near Els Alamus in northeast Spain are now wearing reflective safety vests to avoid police fines.
The town’s mayor, Jose Maria Bea, said a group of 10 prostitutes began using the phosphorescent green coats this month because local police had been fining them 40 Euros ($56 USD).
That’s the amount anyone in Spain can be fined for standing or walking along a highway if they fail to wear a high-visibility safety vest.
Bea said it was dangerous for both the women and motorists if the prostitutes couldn’t be seen clearly.
Even motorists with a vehicle breakdown are forbidden to leave their vehicles without a safety vest.
Sex is a huge industry in Spain, although some cities restrict or ban it in public areas. Â Prostitution is quite legal there but pimping is not.
